70.3 Oceanside: April 4th
The first ½ ironman race of the year!! Talk about dedication!! Many athletes save these longer distance races for later in the year. Committing to such a distance so early in the year requires discipline with little to no lapse in training during the off-season. 1.2 miles of ocean water swimming, 56 miles of road cycling, and 13.1 miles of running . . . 5 ½ to 7 hours later, your race is over.
Two BreakAway athletes had breakthrough performances at Ironman Oceanside 70.3. Heather Singerman, new member of BreakAway’s elite female racing squad, set a new PR for the ½ ironman distance, crossing the line at 5:53:32 and placing a very respectable 20/62 in her age group. Mike Wilson, competing in his first ½ ironman distance, and having just learned to swim just over a year ago, came across the line at 6:31:35, a very impressive outing for having just under a year of racing experience. Suzy Hyer, another new member of BreakAway’s elite female racing squad, had a DNF with a mechanical on the bike, but not after leaving her mark on the swim course with a scorching 29:23 time!!
